This is a copy of one of the oldest Christian icons. According to the legend it was brought here from Sinai. At present the original is kept in Serbia. Archangel Michael is frequently painted by Bulgarian iconographers. An interesting fact is that there are many churches all over the country devoted to him.

Jesus Pantocrator blesses with his right hand and the Gospel in his left for the Doomsday.
The icon is with facing which is characteristic for the Russian iconography school. This technique is not very popular with the Bulgarian and Byzantine iconographers.

The original of the icon is in the church of “Christmas” in the village of Arbanasi near Veliko Turnovo. The church was built between 1681 and 1705.

For the Bulgarian and Russian Orthodox churches the image of the Mother of God holds a sacred power. One of the names people call her is “the gate to heavens” – “Portalchitza”, and the old iconographers have expressed it on the icon.

Daysis (δεησις)
The plot for Daysis or praying is taken from the Doomsday. Jesus sits on a throne in the middle. Virgin Mary is on his left and John the Baptist on his right.

Mother of God Gabrovska
The icon was painted in the end of 18th Century or the beginning of the 19th. The original is kept in the “St. Trinity” church in Gabrovo where its name comes from. It was painted by an iconographer from Triavna because it bears the typical characteristics for that school. Distemper paint was used on the original.

There are two variants known of this icon – with little Jesus sitting on the left side and the other one sitting on the right side.

St. Martyr George the Victor
St. George was probably born in 275 in Capadokia and died in 305. When he was 20 years old he was given a military rank tribune for his services. During the rule of Diocletian he was killed for his protection of Christianity.

Compassionate Mother of God
This icon is one of the most popular in the Bulgarian Orthodox churches. The laity pray to it for protection and health of their children and blessing of their homes.

Jesus enters Jerusalem
The plot for this icon is borrowed from the book of the Old Testament by the prophet Zachary, where the author describes the glorious coming of Jesus to Jerusalem riding a mule.
The Christian Church celebrates this day as Palm Sunday.
